Det egyptiska frimureriet

En intressant gren inom frimureriet är den Egyptiska Riten (ibland på engelska kallad Ancient and Primitive Rite), vilken finns i tre varianter. Misraïmriten, Memphisriten och den förende varianten av de båda föregående nämnda, Memphis-Misraïmriten. Den ursprungliga egyptiska riten skapades av Cagliostro år 1784 under namnet Egyptiens Hermetiska Brödraskap, men har sedan betydligt förändrats men finns fortfarande verksam idag bland annat i Italien.

Om det ursprungliga egyptiska frimureriet skriver Kenneth Mackenzie:

“His system of Masonry was not founded on shadows. Many of the doctrines he enunciated may be found in the Book of the Dead and other important documents of ancient Egypt. And though he may have committed the fatal error of matching himself with the policy of Rome and getting the worst of it, I have not yet been able to find one iota of evidence that he was guilty of anything more reprehensible than an error of judgment during his various journeys.”

Misraïmriten är den som ligger närmast Cagliostros Egyptens Hermetiska Brödraskap, och äger idag endast en äkta loge, vid namn Arc-en-Ciel. Denna rit skapades 1788, då ett antal hermetiska grader av italienskt ursprung inkorporerades i det ursprungliga systemet. Memphisriten skapades av Jacques Etienne Marconis de Negre (den dåvarande stormästarens son) och Mouttet i Paris 1839 som en variant av Misraïmriten, men som ett mer filosofiskt system med tonvikt på studier av forntida och nutida religioner och mysterier.

Robert Macoy beskrev riterna 1871 på följande sett:

“Rite of MEMPHIS, Sometimes called the Oriental Rite. A modification of the Rite of Mizraim, organized in Paris, in 1839, by Messieurs Marconis and Mouttet. It afterward extended to Brussels and Marseilles, thence to New York. It was composed of 90 working and 6 official degrees. For a time it excited some interest in Paris, and then fell into obscurity until 1860, when it was reorganized, the 96 degrees reduced to 30, and then merged into the Grand Orient of France, where it is permitted to slumber.”

”Rite of MISRAIM. This Rite was introduced into France near the commencement of the present century. It made considerable progress, and in 1817, application was made on the part of its friends to the Grand Orient, to accept it as a legitimate branch of Masonry. The application was denied, partly on the ground that the antiquity of the Rite had not been proved, and partly because of the 90 degrees which its ritual comprised 68 were already included in the French system. The rite of Misraim is interesting and instructive, but many of its degrees are too abstruse to be popular. The initiation is a reproduction of the ancient rite of Isis, and represents the contests of Osiris and Typhon, the death, resurrection, and triumph of the former, and the destruction of the latter. There are 90 degrees divided into four series - symbolic, philosophical, mystical and cabalistic, and again divided into seventeen classes. The traditions of this system are full of anachronisms, historical events and characters, separated by hundreds of years, being made to figure on the same scene at the same time. The work entitled "De l'Ordre Maconnique de Misraim," published at Paris, in 1835, by Mons. Marc Bedirride, purporting to give the history of the Order, is a mere romance, and full of puerilities. Nevertheless, many of the degrees are highly interesting and instructive.”

Memphisriten, liksom Memphis-Misraïmriten (förenad under ledning av G. Garibaldi 1881, arbetat hade dock genomförts av John Yarker runt 1875), inleds med de blå graderna i botten i egen version (precis som alla andra riter/system) följt av graderna 4-32 i en version liknade de tillhörande  Urgamla och Antagna Skotska Riten, samt Generalinspektör som ritens 33°, för att sedan följas av en mängd grader med mycket skilda namn och innehåll hämtade från de båda riterna. Riten innehåller vitt skilda element hämtade från det antika Egypten, hermetism, gnosticism, rosencreuzeriet, de antika pytagoreerna, kabbalan med mera.

I Sverige idag finns representerade såväl Memphis-Misraïmriten, som Memphisriten. Inom jurisdiktionen arbetar Sublima Sanktuariet av den Urgamla och Primitiva Memphisriten för Sverige och Italien, och genom avtal finns möjlighet för bröder att även arbeta i Memphis-Misraïmriten.
